Eykyn Maclean is excited to present Space Encircled at this year's Frieze Masters (stand A6). The term, invented by the Russian avant-garde artist, Alexander Archipenko, reversed the concept of sculpture surrounded by space, in which the void became a vital element of the work. The use of negative space as an integral part of a sculpture or painting has influenced numerous artists throughout the 20th Century, evidenced in the works by artists from both sides of the Atlantic selected for this presentation.
This exhibition introduces a concept which will be explored further at Eykyn Maclean in the first solo exhibition of Archipenko’s work in New York City in over a decade, from 9 November to 14 December 2018.
